Irrigation in Jharkhand


  • There are 16 river basin in the Jharkhand. 
  • There are 208 ground water blocks that are under exploited. 
  • Nearly 10% of agricultural land in Jharkhand is put under irrigation. 
  • There are four sources of irrigation in the state are well,  tanks, canals and tube wells. 
  • Well irrigates around 29.38% of the total area of Jharkhand. 
  • Highest percentage of well irrigation has been recorded in Dumka and Jamtara. 
  • Government scheme like 'Jal dhara' is initiated to increase the number of Wells in the state. 
  • Tank irrigate 19.07% of the total area of Jharkhand. 
  • The highest percentage of tank irrigation is in Pakur. 
  • There are 3 types of canals -perennial Canal, Rain Fed Canal, and Multi purpose Canals. 
  • Perennial Canal with water throughout the year. 
  • Rainfed canal have water during rainy season. 
  • Multi purpose Canals used for irrigation and power generation. 
  • Highest Canal irrigation is in West Singhbhum and Saraikela. 
  • Tube well irrigation is only 8.25% of total area. 
  • Highest percentage of canal is found in Bokaro. 
  • There are 32000 villages in Jharkhand. 
  • There are 8 dams as part of Damodar Valley project developed under joint effort of Jharkhand and West Bengal. 
  • The total number of large dams in Jharkhand is 49.
  • (DVC) Damodar Valley Corporation was established in 1948.
  • DVC project was developed on the pattern of the tennesse valley project of USA. 
  • Tilaiya Dam on Barakar river in Koderma or Hazaribagh district. 
  • Konar Dam on Konar river,  which is tributary of Damodar River. 
  • Maithon Dam on Barakar river in Dhanbad district. 
  • Panchet Dam on Damodar River in Purulia district of West Bengal. 
  • Bal-Pahari Dam on Barakar river in the south of Giridih. 
  • Bokaro Dam on Bokaro river.  
  • Tenu Ghat Dam on Damodar river at Tenughat. 
  • Mayurakshi river originates in Trikut mountain in Deoghar and joins Hooghli in West Bengal. 
  • Mayurakshi project is initiated in the state of Jharkhand and West Bengal. 
  • The Canada multi-purpose dam is established in Dumka district in a place called Massanjore. 
  • Multi-purpose river valley project on subarnarekha and its tributaries. 
  • Scarcity of water is the main hindrance in promotion of crops production in Jharkhand. 
  • Ranchi district has over 50% of its agricultural land under irrigation. 
  • Dhanbad district has less than 5% area under irrigation. 
  • 8 projects are running under the Damodar Valley multipurpose project.
